Home for a couple of weeks resting and working on the new Comedy Stage Hypnosis Show. It opens in Branson on Friday nights at 10PM starting March 11th. My other show Dennis Alm "Magic Champion" will be running Thursday through Saturdays at 2PM beginning March 9th.
The Hypnosis show is currently playing in local clubs and bars and I'm having a ton of fun with it. I hope the Branson audience likes it as much as the Louisville crowd does.

I had a wonderful time last night working a benefit auction for The Council on Developmental Disabilities at the Downtown Marriott. I had the privilege of working with the Wardlow Auction team during the live auction part of the event. We sold 14 items ranging from trips to Destin Florida to beautiful artwork.
The master of ceremonies was Dawne Gee from WAVE TV in Louisville. Dawne did a fantastic job describing the items before Rick Wardlow called for the bids. Over the years I've worked with many celebrity hosts during different fund raising events, and I have to say Dawne goes the extra mile for the cause. I now know why she is such a highly sought after speaker and volunteer host for so many events in Louisville.

   A friend called yesterday to see if I could fill in for him at a show for 15 teenage girls at a home for abused teens. He gave me the directors contact info and said it should be an hour long show and it needed to be clean material, of course.
I got home from 2 Saturday night shows at French Lick Casino and drew up a special program just for the teens. Packed up my case and headed over to the show to be greeted by the director at the door. She showed me where I would be performing my program and I set up my show. The teens came in and we greeted each other with smiles and small talk and I began the show.
   There were five other adults ladies serving the teens dinner during my show. Baked spaghetti, macaroni, sausage stars, and other plates of delicious food was being served to these beautiful teens. I spotted a large basket of dinner rolls on the center table and immediately changed my opening trick. I asked for a five dollar bill from one of the adults then asked her to sign her name on the bill with a black sharpie. I took the bill, folded it up with my finger tips and made it vanish. They were pretty impressed so far and then I asked one of the teens to toss me any one of the dinner rolls in the large basket. With my hands empty I poked a hole in the dinner roll and produced the signed bill. A that point the kids, staff,and myself too knew it was going to be a fun show.
   Next I asked a 15 year old girl named Kim to come up and help me with the next trick. This trick is one that I almost always do for kids and usually have a 7 or 8 year old as my helper. Kim was my helper this time and she was smiling and and trash talking me and I just knew it was going to be fun. Every magician knows the sponge ball routine where the magician and helper each hold one sponge ball in their closed hand. The magicians ball magically vanishes and after a few seconds it appears inside the helpers hand along with her ball. This is a fun trick that I have performed thousands of times over the last 30 years. It always gets a good reaction and it is normally fun for all involved. My problem yesterday was that when Kim opened her hand and realized that my ball had magically appeared in her hand it scared her so much she ran out of the room crying. After a few hugs from one of the adult ladies she came back in and had a seat. I looked at her red eyes and knew that she was deeply effected by my magic but not the way I intended it to.
I could have just apologized to Kim and continued with the show with hopes that she would recover and enjoy the rest of the show. Looking back into her eyes again I knew that I couldn't do that. These kids were at this center because they have been abused in some way. Physically, sexually, or mentally these innocent children were abused and my job was to entertain them and for an hour or so they could forget about all the crap they were going through. I'm not sure what was going on in Kim's head when that second ball magically appeared in her hand but after thinking about I had violated her personal space. I deceived her and she was traumatized by the experience. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that this little simple kids trick would cause so much pain when normally it brings joy to all involved. I stopped in my tracks and exposed the secret to everyone there letting them know that it was simply sleight-of- hand and not real magic. It took me five minutes but she giggled when I told her how it was done. I scaled back the rest of the show with softer effects and we had a great time. I was asked to come back in the summer to see my new friends again. I'm looking forward to it but won't be bringing the sponge balls.

New Night for the Battle of the Hands Show

Beginning April 5th the Battle of the Hands shows moves to the first Monday every month. The reason for the move is really exciting. A new magic circuit has been created between 3 ongoing monthly magic shows in Louisville, Indianapolis, and Chicago. The new circuit is called the "I-65 magic circuit" (until we come up with a better name)

This will allow more regional and national acts a chance for 3 gigs in 3 consecutive nights when booked on the circuit. This ideal came from Taylor Martin the producer of Indy Magic Monthly. I'm excited that the Comedy Caravan allowed me to move the Battle Show make this circuit work. The first performer running the circuit in Jania Taylor from Ohio. Jania will be in Louisville April 5 and Indy April 6.

Enjoying this picture perfect day here in southern Indiana. It's 70 degrees and the sun is feeling really good as I sit outside on my deck. My two 50 foot tall pin oaks are dropping leaves as the wind is blowing through them, creating the beautiful sound of nature at it's best. Not sure if we will have another day like this for the rest of the year.

I made it to the gym 3 times this week. Finally feeling 100% again. We had 2 sold out shows at French Lick Casino Saturday night. I've been working on this venue for 6 months and everything turned out better than expected. The resort really made us feel at home and we will be returning real soon. I'm just waiting on dates from the producer. Today I'm trying to promote the "Battle" show at the comedy club Monday. This is the 1 year anniversary of the show. What a great exeperience it has been for me to produce this show. I have a dozen or so acts that I rotate in and out of the show every month. All of these performers are becoming more polished and professional. It has proved to be a good stage for all of us.

The Boxing Gym

I stopped in for a workout with my good friend Terry Middleton. His Martial Arts School has been operating in New Albany Indiana for 35 years. I earned my Black Belt there in 2000 and also taught Blue and Purple Belts for over a year. On the 3rd floor is the boxing gym where I headed for a workout. The bell rings every 3 minutes and you move to a different station for training. I worked on the heavy bag and speed bag for about 30 minutes, then headed downstairs to watch my wife finish up her Kickboxercise class. The students and instructors are super friendly folks. Call me if you want to come have a good work out. It's on me :)

Last Friday I performed a 30 minute show for 80 4th graders at Morgan Elementary School in Palymra Indiana. The kids were studying Houdini and I was asked to come and give a short talk and give them a demonstration of tricks that Houdini performed. The show went great but the best part was all the letters the kids wrote to me after the show. My wife and I sat and read each one of them last night. They were so funny and we loved each one of them. A few of the quotes are listed below...
"Can you come to my house and do a show? If yes I will have to ask my mom first" "Can you make a book of all your secrets and mail it to me?"
"Can you come to my birthday party?"

I made a few more friends last Friday.

Ice Storm

It's hard to imagine 3 days without electricity in the house but it really wasn't that bad. The snow and ice storm snapped a 30' river birch in my front yard. I'm lucky it didn't come down on my house.
I was able to check email from my cell phone but still felt pretty much shut down when it came to business. I enjoyed the quiet around me and passed time by cooking on the wood stove and letting my son Ben kick my butt in chess. I think it's God's way of slowing us down just a little bit.

All of the sudden there has been a bump in business and hopefully we are on course for a great year. I credit the bump in business to creative marketing, and working my butt off. I've come to realize that when your in show business you had better be in the marketing business too. Maybe that's why they call it show "business". What most people don't realize is that most of the work is done before we ever take a step on stage.

St Mary's

I had the pleasure of performing at St. Mary's elementary school yesterday. Located in the hills of Floyds Knobs Indiana, 125 kids from grades K-6 were excited to only have a couple more hours before starting Christmas break.
I knew as soon as I walked in the door that it was going to be a special day, and looked forward to entertaining them. As they lined up to have a seat on the gym floor I couldn't help to notice that everyone had a big smile on their face. It was showtime and the 45 minutes went by way to fast. I made a few new friends at St. Mary's yesterday. Hope to get back there soon!

It's been a busy week! The Battle of the Hands Show at the Comedy Caravan was Monday night. We had a packed house and what a show it was. A new act this month was the brother team of Tyler & Seth. These two young guys have a lot of talent and even more potential. I invited them back for next months show. It should be fun!

It's Thanksgiving day and I'm working on my new show that opens at French Lick Casino on Jan 3rd. Emailing Brent Braun who is my technical director for the show. I'm looking forward to hitting full rehearsal. A lot of work to get done in 6 weeks.

I'm updating my web site today and booking a few new holiday shows. I'm excited that we have sold a good number of tickets for the upcoming Battle of the Hands show at the Comedy Caravan. We are competing with Monday Night Football and a new comedy club that opened downtown. The show is in it's 9th month already and it's been a blast. I'm always looking for new acts to put on the show.
